Crivo series 5, 20x20cm, Monoprint etching on paper

This series is a tribute to my family’s rich legacy of craftsmanship, with a particular focus on Bordados de Crivo de S. Miguel da Carreira—a traditional form of lace embroidery from northern Portugal. Drawing inspiration from the delicate doilies that were ever-present throughout my childhood, the works reflect not only a technical homage but also a deeply personal narrative woven into each thread.
Through a visual language shaped by geometric grids, softly undulating edges known as colos, and the tactile quality of handworked fabric, the pieces echo the quiet elegance and precision of this ancestral art form. Organic motifs allude to the rhythms of rural life—fields, flora, and the domestic rituals that defined the everyday. The embroidery becomes both a memory and a meditation: on heritage, on manual labor, and on the role of ornamentation in creating a sense of home and continuity across generations.
